Alpine Flora Fragility in Colorado’s Tundra

© 2025 Classic Visions Photography

By June, Colorado’s alpine high country bursts into a vibrant kaleidoscope of color—a fleeting spectacle that vanishes all too soon. But beneath this beauty lies an ecosystem on the edge. Delicate soils, slow-growing plants, and shallow root systems make the alpine tundra incredibly vulnerable to human impact. These resilient plants endure relentless solar radiation, fierce winds, and a brutally short 6–12 week growing season.

Even the smallest disturbance—one misplaced step off-trail—can leave damage that lasts for centuries. These fragile landscapes don’t get second chances. Understanding and respecting their limits isn’t just important—it’s essential to ensuring their survival for future visitors to witness.
